A new store space and office area is part of the Central Library renovation, and The Friends Book Sales Committee took a tour of the construction in progress on February 24, 2016. A few photos from our tour of the main floor and lower floor under construction (where our new offices will be located):

The “Book Nook’ is still open on the south side of the Central Library, but we currently have no space to process more donated books. We are selling our current inventory for $1 per book regardless of cover (hardback or paperback) or size. Please come in and shop our sale – we’ll have to close it all down in the next phase of construction. Luckily, that’s when we’ll have our new space available.

Some time in May or June, our new space on the lower east side of the building will be finished and ready. The Book Sales Committee will be creating a new store, organizing areas for storage, and transferring our online sales operation into the new Friends office space on the lower level.

Library Arts and Culture Director Cindy Cleary and Administrative Manager / construction project liaison Jay Wollenhaupt led several of us on a tour of the new spaces, which will give us shelving and storage space along two hallways, and two rooms across from each other and close to the building’s new elevator. Thanks to our VP Book Sales Peter Breckheimer, Treasurer Marie Fish, and committee members Mary Alice Toomey and Janice Carter, who joined President Elise Kalfayan and library staff on this tour as a first step in designing our new store.

Sales of donated books and materials have provided up to half our revenues the past few years, but this year with no storage space we haven’t been able to sell as much. For this and many other reasons, signing up more Friends in the community is our major priority. Please be a Friend and join us! If you’d like to help out in any way with our new book store (organizing this summer, opening later summer or early fall), please contact us at info@fogpl.org!
